History
With the formation of a separate province of Odisha in 1936, Bargarh district was carved out incorporating the areas of two sub-divisions, Bargarh and Padmapur from the erstwhile district of Sambalpur in March 1993.
The Judgeship of Bargarh was separated from its parent judgeship Sambalpur with effect from 12th July, 2011 and the Court of District and Sessions Judge started functioning at Bargarh with outlying courts at Padmapur, Sohella, Barpalli, Attabira and Bheden.
The District Court Building at Bargarh constructed by the R&B Division, was inaugurated on 14th October, 2006. The Court Building consists of three floors and in each floor, there are four Courts. In 2021, provision for one more Court Room was made in the building by renovating two rooms for the functioning of the Court of J.M.F.C. another provision for one Virtual Courtroom was made at 2nd floor of the building. The Library and e-Sewa Kendra are functioning in the District Court Building. All ICT facilities including VC are available in each Court Room for functioning of the Court in virtual mode. Moreover, drinking water facility in each floor and toilet facilities are available in the building for the Officers, staff, lawyers, litigant public and other stakeholders.
Bargarh is located in Western Odisha, close to the border of neighboring state of Chhattisgarh. It is positioned at 21.33°N 83.62°E with an average elevation of 171 meter (561 feet). The whole of Bargarh district lies in the Deccan plateau with Eastern Ghats running close to the town. As per the earthquake zoning of India, Bargarh falls in the zone 2 category, the least earthquake prone zone. The Bargarh district headquarter is on the National Highway No.6 running from Kolkata to Mumbai, hence well connected to the rest of the country with comfortable road. There is a Railway Station and the nearest Airport is Raipur (220 km) & Bhubaneswar (350 km). The best period of the year to visit this place is between October to March. During this period the Dhanu Yatra Festival (World’s biggest open air theatre) is observed here. There are a number of good hotels besides numerous Govt. Circuit House and Guest houses in the district providing accommodation to tourists and visitors throughout the year. The nearby tourist spots are well connected to the district headquarter with good road and communication facilities. Bargarh District formed on the 1st April 1993 being devided from Sambalpur District. It is one of the illustrious District of Odisha. Bargarh District lies on the western most corner of Odisha between 20 degree 43’ to 21 degree 41’ north latitude and 82 degree 39’ to 83 degree 58’ east longitude. The District is surrounded by Chhatisgarh state on the north, Sambalpur District on the east, Balangir and Subarnapur on the south and Nuapada District on the west. The original name of place was “Baghar Kota” as known from an inscription of the 11th Century A.D. The place was called “Bargarh” probably from the time of Balaram Dev, the Chauhan Raja of Sambalpur, who made it for first time his headquarters and constructed a big part for its protection. Divided into Bargarh plain, Borasambar and Ambabhona and Lakhanpur, Bargarh District is densely populated. The District covers an area of 5837 sq km consisting total population of 1,478,833 as per 2011 census. Total male population of the District is 748,332 and female population is 730,501. Rural population is 1,242,795 and urban population is 103,541. Total SC population of the District is 260,719 and more than total ST population of 260,691. As per administrative set ups are implicated, Bargarh is the headquarters of the District. There are two sub divisions in the District, Bargarh and Padampur. Total number of Tahasils is 12 viz. Attabita, Bargarh, Barpali, Bhatli, Bheden, Padampur, Paikmal, Sohella, Bijepur and Gaisilet. There are 12 CD Blocks in the Bargarh District viz. Ambabhona, Attabira, Bargarh, Barpali, Bhatli, Bheden, Bijepur, Gaisilet, Jharbandh, Padampur, Paikmal and Sohella. Bargarh Municipality is the one Municipality in the District and 3 N.A.Cs are Barpali, Padampur and Attabira. There are total 248 Gram Panchayats and 1208 Revenue villages in the District. The Bargarh District experiences extreme type of climate with hot and dry summer followed by humid monsoon and chilling winter. The temperature varies between 10 degree Celsius to 46 degree Celsius. The winter season lasts between November to February. The hot season follows thereafter and continues till the second week of June. The south-west monsoon season is from mid June to the end of September. The average annual rainfall in the District is 1527 mm. Agriculture acts as the backbone of the economy of the Bargarh District. Most of the indigenous inhabitants in Bargarh District mainly practice crop cultivation. Because of the presence of natural drainage facilities, the District plain supports the growth of large agricultural products and is free from insects and pests. As we go through the educational scenario of the District, Bargarh District has got many educational institutes like Pharmacy College Barpali, Vikash Junior College, Sri Sri Nrusinghanath Ayurvedic College Paikmal, Panchayat College Bargarh, Larambha College, Bargarh Law college, Anchal College Padampur, Attabira College, Padmashree Krutartha Acharya College of Engineering Bargarh. Bargarh district celebrates many festivals round the year. Common festivals like Nuakhai, Dhanuyatra, Maha Shivratri of Kedarnath, Nrusingha Chaturdarshi, Sitalasasthi, Viswakarma Puja, Bali yatra of Khuntapali, Baisakh Mela of Nrusinghanath, Falguna Mela of Bhatli. Many prominent personalities born in this district like Parbati Giri, Padmashree Krutartha Acharya, Padmashree Kunjabihari Meher, Surendra Meher, Manabodh Rana.
